Five Facts About Air Duct Cleaning

Did you know the air quality in your home can be much worse than the air outdoors? It may be difficult to believe, but the Environmental Protection Agency says indoor air quality is one of America’s top 5 health threats. The potential allergens and pathogens in your ductwork are long: bacteria, kitchen grease, dust, and pet dander.

The EPA lists indoor air quality as one of America’s top 5 health threats. Allergens and contaminants can cause this in the air ductwork of the building. For those who suffer from respiratory illnesses like asthma or COPD, the air quality inside the home is essential.

Dust and dander are two common allergens in the house, but other potential pathogens end up in your ductwork. Mold, bacteria, hair, building material, and other small particulates that flow into the air ducting are recirculated through the heating and cooling system. It is a good idea to get your air ducts cleaned at least once a year, preferably twice a year.

Your air ducts are in nearly constant use year-round, so they can accumulate dust, dander, and allergens over time.

The Air Duct Cleaning Process

During the air duct cleaning process, a rotating brush is inserted through the length of the air ductwork. This brush dislodges any dust, debris, and allergens. On the ductwork openings, a powerful vacuum is attached with a large hose that goes to an outside receptacle. This unique air duct cleaning equipment can safely extract large quantities of allergens, dust, and dander from your air ducts.

During this cleaning process, the registers, vents, heating and cooling coils, and other HVAC system components are thoroughly cleaned. A completely clean air duct system can circulate hot or cold air without spreading pollutants, allergens, or contaminants.

How Do You Know It’s Time For Air Duct Cleaning?

Here are three facts about duct cleaning to help determine if your air ducts are due for a thorough cleaning.

1. Older Homes and Restorations Need Post-Construction Cleaning

If your home recently went through asbestos or lead abatement, it’s good to have the air ducts cleaned. Removing lead paint or asbestos insulation means carcinogenic dust in the ducts. That’s a good reason to clean the air ducts. Suppose you have a family member with an allergy-related illness that they cannot seem to shake. In that case, the problem may be recirculated dust and allergens.

Air duct cleaning is recommended every three to five years. We also recommend ductwork cleaning after new construction, renovations, or moving into a new home.

Additionally Newer Homes Need More Frequent Duct Cleaning.

As homes are built tighter than they used to be, indoor air quality has declined. Even with an indoor air exchanging unit, a home is susceptible to more air quality issues. Ductwork now acts as a trap for dust.

2. Pests Contribute to Poor Duct Health

Did you know that the average house accumulates 40 pounds of dust each year? While that number may shock you, what’s lurking in your ducts can be even more shocking.

Bugs could be lurking in your ducts. Insects can make their way into ductwork and can even attract other pests that prey on them.

Ensure the animals or vermin are removed when there is any evidence of animal infestation in your HVAC ducts, then have the ducts cleaned so no remnants of their presence are in the ductwork. If there is visible mold in the air ducts, or if you smell mold anytime the air conditioner or furnace is running, there is mold in the ductwork that dust must be eradicated.

3. Duct Cleaning Cuts Down On Your Energy Bill

If you see dust, dander, or other allergens emanating from the air duct registers when the air is flowing, it’s time to clean the air ducts.

Duct cleaning helps increase the efficiency of your HVAC system. When your ducts are free of debris, air can flow properly. But if your ductwork is clogged and dirty, it decreases efficiency and puts unnecessary strain on your HVAC system.

Studies have shown that we spend 60-90% of our lives indoors, so all of that dirt and debris is recirculated in the air you breathe.
